While many patients successfully take commercially manufactured medications,
many experience problems because of allergies to an inactive ingredient, the
inability to swallow, the need for unique quantities of medication, or the need
for a more palatable dosage form.
The primary objective of Prescription Compounding is to achieve positive
therapeutic outcomes for patients with unique needs through the provision of
medications which have been specially formulated and prepared for them by
compounding pharmacists.
At West-Val Pharmacy, it is important that our customers are being given the
best service, the highest quality product, and the dosage form that best suits
their needs. With our Compounding service we can offer treatments and dosage
forms that are otherwise unavailable commercially.
We set our standards high, and we work hard every day to ensure that those
standards are met.
What is compounding?
Pharmaceutical compounding is the method of preparing
medications to meet each physician's and patients unique
needs. The physician first prescribes the medication, and
then the pharmacist takes the necessary ingredients,
compounds them, and dispenses the medicine to the patient in
a delivery system that best fits the patients’ needs.
Compounding allows us to eliminate offensive ingredients in
the medication and to adjust the strength to meet the
specific needs of our patients. All this is done through
consultation with the patient and his/her physician.
Prescription Compounding would help if a patient is:
- allergic to preservatives, dyes or fillers
- sensitive to standard drug strengths
Compounding also allows us to adjust the delivery system to best suit the
patients needs. With a physician’s consent, a compounding pharmacist can:
- change the strength of a medication
- alter its form to make it easier for the patient to ingest
- add flavor to make it more palatable
Compounding pharmacists also have helped patients who are experiencing
chronic pain. For example, some arthritic patients cannot take certain
medications due to gastrointestinal side effects. Working with their physician’s
prescription, a compounding pharmacist can provide them with a topical
preparation with the anti-inflammatory or analgesic their doctor has prescribed
for them. Compounded prescriptions often are used for pain management in hospice
care.
